I bought a Whirlibird parka Dec 2010 for skiing in the Northeast. I'm very happy with my decision. The interchange design really does give you 4 season use. In spring, summer, and fall I used the shell alone as a rain jacket when it wasn't really cold but wet. In spring and fall when it was cold but dry, I used the liner as a lightweight jacket. The liner also saw some use on the beach on summer nights.
As for fit, I'm 6' 0" tall and weigh about 215 lbs with a 36" waist and 45" chest. I can usually buy a L size in jackets but in this case I'm glad I checked Columbia's size charts. According to their charts, I was either at the very top end of the L size chest measurement or the XL if I wanted some room. I went with the XL and it's perfect. The extra room allows me to have a base layer + shirt or fleece underneath and still allows me to move without restriction. So my advice is to forget your "usual" S, M, L , or whatever and pay close attention to Columbia's size charts. If you do that, you should get a good fit.
OK, the big question.....warmth on the slopes. This jacket is fantastic. The Omni-Heat technology really does seem to work. I can ski all day without either overheating and sweating or getting cold as the sun sets after 8 hours on the slopes. With the hood, pit zips, powder skirt, soft fleece around the collar, wind blocking, and water repellency, there are plenty of options to adjust the jacket to your exertion level so you stay warm and dry all day. And a huge plus.....the Whirlibird isn't bulky or restrictive. It's comfortable for me over a wide range of temps and activity levels.
I like it so much, I just bought one for my oldest son for Christmas 2011 while my youngest son has a kids Bugaboo Tech jacket waiting for him under the tree.
For the price, I think this is one of the best ski jackets on the market. Highly recommended!

I will not try to compare it to other brands of products of the same brand since i have no idea how the other ones are.
I am extremely happy with the jacket, it was expensive but I have never doubted for a second that it wasn't worth every penny, the design looks great and it has tons of little features that make it surprisingly comfortable, the people at columbia care about making excellent products

This is my 2nd columbia jacket & I just love it. I gave up driving (for the most part) 7 yrs ago, so I walk or take public tranportation everywhere. This jacket with the inner liner by itself is great down to about mid 30's & with the shell on top a lot lower. The omni-heat is really fantastic. I do like the snug fit around the waist. Nice new feature. Thanks Columbia!!

You get great customer service and a great product when you buy the Whirlibird. It's a good looking jacket (the abyss), that actually looks like it's picture. I know some companies mess with the lighting to make their product look better than it is, but what you see here is what you get. It's a super warm jacket with some pretty cool features. Would definitely recommend it to anyone in the market for a warm winter jacket.

I bought this for my husband since this is our first winter living in a snowy region. He LOVES everything about it! He can wear just a t-shirt underneath in very low temps and still keep warm. It's not bulky at all and it's great for rain too. He bought the Whirliird Women's parka for me and I love it for the same reasons... Highly recommend!

After trying on several interchange jackets, the Whirlibird was one of my favorites, if anything because of the name. So whimsical. Nevertheless, the whirlibird has a nice insulated liner that is more than enough in most any climates, and I feel is warmer than most of the other Columbia Interchange jackets. The insulation will make this jacket feel a little puffy, but you know that you will be warm when it gets well below freezing.
The cut was a little tight in the shoulders, however I do have some pretty broad shoulders, and this is nothing I wouldn't expect.
I would recommend this product.

The name is true to the color, the sea salt parts of the jacket are STARK white. The pics on the site make it look almost khaki or beige, which was what I was actually hoping for. When I went to the store the white parts had already collected black fuzz all over them from just rubbing against other jackets on the rack.
As far as fit it was slightly tight in the shoulders/armpits, yet loose around the bottom (tried an XL, I'm 6'1" 170#'s).
I would recommend this product.

The Whirlibird is a lovely piece of creation from Columbia! I bought the SeaSalt color...great texture, quality, inner shell with Omni Heat is great too. However, I am a true-size small, 5 feet four inches and this one ran a bit large on me...kinda drowned me. The fit was too loose [I took a small]..so if you're small built and want a smart fit then this is not the one. Else, it is the simple superb! I returned this... :-(

Bought this coat for snow days and skiing. I am a little broad shouldered and find it hard to find coats that fit. This one is roomy without being baggy and snug in the right places. I love the elastic snap skirt to keep the coat from riding up and the snow/wind from getting in. The pockets are roomy and the zippers easy to grab with gloves on. Would have liked the liner to be a little more fashionable when as a standalone, but other than that can't wait to see colder weather.
I would recommend this product.

The jacket is super nice. It keeps you really worm with just the inner layer. I bought the intense red color and it looks cool. Giving 3 stars because the inseam of the interchange came off within 2 weeks of use. Although Columbia has agreed to change it, I did not expect this to happen for such a good brand name. Could be an isolated case will find out once the replaced jacket comes.

I just moved to the Boston area and have been doing a lot of walking to get around. I realized I would need something sturdy for my 4am 30 minute walks to work in the mornings...The Whirlibird was just the something! It keeps me incredibly warm without overheating me which is such a good balance for the type of person who would normally zip and unzip his coat because I'm always a different temperature. Another feature I love is that the lower section fits snugly to the body so that when its windy you don't feel the gusts.

I purchased this jacket thinking I would be a medium, since most other clothes I wear are medium, but ended up getting a small after taking my body measurements. I was a bit worried as I usually don't get small sizes, but when it arrived I couldn't have be more satisfied. The color of the jacket looked even better than I was expecting and the fit was absolutely perfect. The interchange is very simple and easy to do. I being to fell warm in just seconds after slipping it on. I haven't got a chance to really try in out in the cold yet, but I expect I'll be comfy all winter long, and I don't like cold weather. I love it Columbia! Awesome jacket!

I bought this jacket based on reading the reviews, and i have to say i agree with what people are saying, i bought it on line thinking i was a large person only to find out that i was swimming in it, i contacted columbia and they led me their employee store where i was able to switch it out for a medium, the medium fits me like a glove, and the omni-heat is fantastic, i was instantly warm. im so excited for the upcoming cold weather, and the fact that it is basically two jackets in one is one of the best investments i made. i would highly recommend this to anyone who is on the fence on this item.
