A SUPERB JACKETI must confess to being a Columbia brand convert. I now have the Powerfly and Alaskan jackets.
I wanted something to sit snugly between the two and with the added bonus of a hood over the powerfly.
This jacket is absolutely superb although not quite perfect.
The most obvious fault being the lack of ANY inside pockets!! My Powerly has plenty of storage on the inside. This one has none. Very remiss Columbia. The hood has no adjustment. This is a huge failure. In strong winds you might as well give up and wear a hat. This hood is so lose and floppy that it is rendered practically useless in anything other than a breeze.
Minor gripes aside this is a superb jacket. The turbodown seems to work really well. When tested in a really strong and bitterly cold wind the jacket kept me snug and warm with only a t-shirt underneath. Were not talking Artic conditions but skinny dipping in Rutland water would have been a definite no no! Wind resistance seems particularly good, rain resistance is perfectly acceptable. As promised the jacket retains warmth when wet. In really bad rain I stick my Montane hardshell over the top (Hurricane event 3) and I am warm and guaranteed dry.
The fit is a little generous perhaps but still looks good. The zips are smooth and work well.
All in all I assess this to be a cracking down jacket.
